introduction

physiology is the study of the fuction of the living things.

Human physiology is concerned with the way the human body works. it is the study of the fuctions of the organs and sysytems and the way these fuctions are integrated.

The human body is made up of 75-100 trillion cells which are arranged in a variety of combination and form various degrees of organized structures.

Body Compartments

Normally the body is divided into:

1- intracellular compatments .

2- extracellular compartments.

The total body water ( t.b.w) in both compatments constitutes 60% of total body weight in a normale adult male.

In infants is about 75% and is less than 60% in adult female and obese people due to hight content of fat in their bodies.

The t.w.b is divided into the following:

1- the intracellular fluid compatment (I.C.F):

it is the water inside the cell . it account for 2/3 ofthe the tb water or 40% of tb weight.

2-extacellular fluid compartment (E.C.F):

which is the volume of water outside the cells and is 1/3 of tb water or 20% of tb weight. it is distibuted as the following:

a- 5% inside vessels called intravascular fluid (ivf) which is the plasma in the circulatory vessels, arteries, veins and lymphatics

b- 15 % extracellular are outside the vessels bathing the cells called interstitial fluid (isf)

N.B / the total blood volume is about 8% of body weight which includes the plasma and the cellular elements of the blood

HOMEOSTASISI

cells are surrounded by the interstital fluid which constitiute the internal enviroment fot these cells. life is compatible within narrow limits of change in the chemical or physical properties of this internal enviroment.

Homeostasisi means: keeping the condition in the internal enviroment constant.

* Living cells take up oxygen and food materials from the interstitial fluid and give up carbon dioxide and waste product by exchange throught the cell membrane

* to maintain the composotion of of the intersitial fluid constant a second exchange occurs throught the capillary wall. Mor oxygen and food materials diffuse fromm the blood to the interstitial fluid and waste product diffuse to the blood.

* Finally , the blood then picks up more food from the alimentray tract and oxygen from the respiratory system and waste product are secreated by the kidney

The cell membrane

The cell membrane that surrounds the cell completely avery thin elastic and semipermeable membrane.

It is composed mainely of

* proteins 55% * other lipids 4%

* phospholipids 25% * carbohydrates 3%

The membrane are dynamic structures and their constuents are being renewed at different rates.

There are two types of protein that occur in the cell membrane.

The integral protein : that pass all the way throught the membrane

The peripheral protein :that are attached only to one one surface of the membrane and do not penerate it
