Active inhibition
Definition:- Release tone from muscle to induce muscle relaxation.
Types :- A-Hold –Relax (HR
B-Hold -Relax with agonist contraction.
C-Agonist contraction (AC
NOOOOTE:-
Agonist group of muscles is the unshortened group.
Active inhibition is important for:-
A-Prior to stretching exercise to reduce pain.
B-Used in case of muscle guarding which leads to spasm and then adhesions and contractures.
C-HOLD is important to cause isometric contraction in the shortened group of muscles depending on principle that(Maximum contraction followed by maximum relaxation.
Resistance is given at the maximum length of shortening.(Point of restriction to stretch.
A-Hold-Relax:-
-Principle (Idea) :- Maximum contraction followed by maximum relaxation.
Exercise:-
A-Give resistance to cause isometric contraction in the shortened group of muscles for about 5__10 sec…..Example if biceps is shortened so give resistance against elbow flexion.
B-Remove the resistance to allow the muscles to relax.
C-Take the muscles in passive stretch….(Extend the elbow passively
B-Hold-Relax with agonist contraction:-
-Principle :- -Maximum contraction is followed by maximum relaxation.
-Reciprocal innervation which means: Contraction of agonist muscles leads to relaxation of antagonist group of muscles.
Exercise:-
A-Give resistance to shortened group of muscles (Antagonist
B-Remove the resistance to allow muscle relaxation
C-Order the patient to stretch the shortened group of muscles actively (Extend your elbow) so cause reciprocal innervation lead to relaxation of shortened group.
Example to illustrate meaning of reciprocal innervation:-Biceps contract actively when stimulated by excitatory alpha motor neurons,, at same time Triceps is stimulated by inhibitory alpha motor neurons to relax.
C-Agonist contraction:-
-Principle:- Reciprocal innervation
Exercise:-
A-Give resistance to agonist (Un shortened) group of muscles.
B-Remove resistance then order patient to stretch shortened muscles actively (extend your elbow
